- | |
Vain folly of another age | B |
This wandering over earth | C |
To find the peace by some dark sin | D |
Banish'd our household hearth | E |
- | |
On Lebanon the dark green pines | F |
Wave over sacred ground | G |
And Carmel's consecrated rose | H |
Springs from a hallow'd mound | G |
- | |
Glorious the truth they testify | I |
And blessed is their name | J |
But even in such a sacred spot | K |
Are sin and woe the same | J |
- | |
O pilgrim with each toilsome step | L |
Vain every weary day | M |
There is no charm in soil or shrine | N |
To wash thy guilt away | M |
- | |
Return with prayer and tear return | O |
To those who weep at home | P |
To dry their tears will more avail | Q |
Than o'er a world to roam | P |
- | |
There's hope for one who leaves with shame | J |
The guilt that lured before | R |
Remember He who said 'Repent ' | - |
Said also 'Sin no more ' | - |
- | |
Return and in thy daily round | G |
Of duty and of love | S |
Thou best wilt find that patient faith | T |
Which lifts the soul above | S |
- | |
In ev'ry innocent prayer each child | U |
Lisps at his father's knee | V |
If thine has been to teach that prayer | W |
There will be hope for thee | V |
- | |
There is a small white church that stands | X |
Beside thy father's grave | Y |
There kneel and pour those earnest prayers | Z |
That sanctify and save | Y |
- | |
Around thee draw thine own home ties | A2 |
And with a chasten'd mind | B2 |
In meek well doing seek that peace | C2 |
No wandering will find | B2 |
- | |
In charity and penitence | C2 |
Thy sin will be forgiven | D2 |
Pilgrim the heart is the true shrine | N |
Whence prayers ascend to Heaven | D2 |
