Vain folly of another ageB
This wandering over earthC
To find the peace by some dark sinD
Banish'd our household hearthE
-
On Lebanon the dark green pinesF
Wave over sacred groundG
And Carmel's consecrated roseH
Springs from a hallow'd moundG
-
Glorious the truth they testifyI
And blessed is their nameJ
But even in such a sacred spotK
Are sin and woe the sameJ
-
O pilgrim with each toilsome stepL
Vain every weary dayM
There is no charm in soil or shrineN
To wash thy guilt awayM
-
Return with prayer and tear returnO
To those who weep at homeP
To dry their tears will more availQ
Than o'er a world to roamP
-
There's hope for one who leaves with shameJ
The guilt that lured beforeR
Remember He who said 'Repent '-
Said also 'Sin no more '-
-
Return and in thy daily roundG
Of duty and of loveS
Thou best wilt find that patient faithT
Which lifts the soul aboveS
-
In ev'ry innocent prayer each childU
Lisps at his father's kneeV
If thine has been to teach that prayerW
There will be hope for theeV
-
There is a small white church that standsX
Beside thy father's graveY
There kneel and pour those earnest prayersZ
That sanctify and saveY
-
Around thee draw thine own home tiesA2
And with a chasten'd mindB2
In meek well doing seek that peaceC2
No wandering will findB2
-
In charity and penitenceC2
Thy sin will be forgivenD2
Pilgrim the heart is the true shrineN
Whence prayers ascend to HeavenD2
