THROUGH the light curtains came the perfumed airA
And flung them back and show'd a garden whereA
The eye could just catch glimpses of those treesB
Which send sweet messages upon the breezeB
To lull a maiden's sleep and fan her cheekC
When inward thoughts in outward blushes speakC
Bequeath's a silken couch just fit to beD
A snowy shrine for some fair deityD
And there a beauty rests lovely as thoseE
Enchanted visions haunting the reposeE
Of the young poet when his eyelids shutF
To dream that love they have but dream'd as yetG
But dream'd Alas that love should ever beD
A happiness but made for phantasieE
And flowers are by her side and her dark eyeH
Seems as it read in them her destinyD
She knew whose hand had gather'd them she knewI
Whose sigh and touch were on their scent and hueI
-
Beautiful language Love's peculiar ownJ
But only to the spring and summer knownJ
Ah little marvel in such clime and ageK
As that of our too earth bound pilgrimageL
That we should daily hear that love is fledM
And hope grown pale and lighted feelings deadM
-
Not for the cold the careless to impartN
By such sweet signs the silence of the heartN
But surely in the countries where the sunO
Lights loveliness in all he shines uponP
Where love is as a mystery and a dreamQ
One single flower upon life's troubled streamQ
There there perchance may the young bosom thrillR
Feeling and fancy linger with love stillR
-
She look'd upon the blossoms and a smileS
A twilight one lit up her lip the whileS
Surely her love is blest no leaves are thereA
That aught of lover's misery declareA
True 'mid them is that pale and pining flowerT
Whose dim blue colour speaks an absent hourT
Yet it is nothing but that tender sorrowU
Of those who part to day to meet to morrowU
-
For there are hope and constancy besideV
And are not these to happiness alliedV
And yet upon that maiden's cheek is caughtW
A summer evening's shade of pensive thoughtX
As if these large soft eyes knew all their fateY
How the heart would its destiny createY
At once too tender and too passionateF
Too made for happiness to be happy hereZ
An angel fetter'd to an earthly sphereA2
And those dark eyes so large so soft so brightB2
So clear as if their very tears were lightB2
They tell that destiny art thou not oneO
To whom love will be like the summer sunO
That feeds the diamond in the secret mineC2
Then calls it from its solitude to shineC2
And piece by piece be broken Watch the bloomD2
And mark its fading to an early tombD2
And read in the decay upon it stealingE2
Of thy own wasted hope and wither'd feelingE2
Ay fitting messengers for love as fairA
As quickly past as his own visions areF2
Fling fling the flowers awayG2
