AND there the island lay the waves aroundA
Had never known a storm for the north windB
Was charm'd from coming and the only airsC
That blew brought sunshine on their azure wingsD
Or tones of music from the sparry cavesE
Where the sea maids make lutes of the pink conchF
These were sea breezes those that swept the landG
Brought other gifts sighs from blue violetsH
Or from June's sweet Sultana the bright roseI
Stole odours On the silver mirror's faceJ
Was but a single ripple that was madeK
By a flamingo's beak whose scarlet wingsD
Shone like a meteor on the stream aroundA
Upon the golden sands were coral plantsL
And shells of many colours and sea weedsM
Whose foliage caught and chain'd the NautilusN
Where lay they as at anchor On each sideO
Were grottoes like fair porticoes with stepsP
Of the green marble and a lovely lightQ
Like the far radiance of a thousand lampsR
Half shine half shadow or the glorious trackS
Of a departing star but faintly seenT
In the dim distance through those caverns shoneU
And play'd o'er the tall trees which seem'd to hideO
Gardens where hyacinths rang their soft bellsV
To call the bees from the anemoneU
Jealous of their bright rivals' golden wealthW
Amid those arches floated starry shapesX
Just indistinct enough to make the eyeY
Dream of surpassing beauty but in frontZ
Borne on a car of pearl and drawn by swansA2
There lay a lovely figure she was queenT
Of the Enchanted Island which was raisedB2
From ocean's bosom but to pleasure herC2
And spirits from the stars and from the seaD2
The beautiful mortal had them for her slavesE
-
She was the daughter of a king and lovedE2
By a young Ocean Spirit from her birthF2
He hover'd o'er her in her infancyD2
And bade the rose grow near her that her cheekG2
Might catch its colour lighted up her dreamsH2
With fairy wonders and made harmonyD2
The element in which she moved at lastI2
When that she turn'd away from earthly loveJ2
Enamour'd of her visions he becameK2
Visible with his radiant wings and boreL2
His bride to the fair islandM2
