The Enchanted Island. By Danby Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKDALMNOPQR STUOVUWXYZA2TB2C2D2E E2F2D2G2H2D2I2J2K2L2 M2AND there the island lay the waves around | A |
Had never known a storm for the north wind | B |
Was charm'd from coming and the only airs | C |
That blew brought sunshine on their azure wings | D |
Or tones of music from the sparry caves | E |
Where the sea maids make lutes of the pink conch | F |
These were sea breezes those that swept the land | G |
Brought other gifts sighs from blue violets | H |
Or from June's sweet Sultana the bright rose | I |
Stole odours On the silver mirror's face | J |
Was but a single ripple that was made | K |
By a flamingo's beak whose scarlet wings | D |
Shone like a meteor on the stream around | A |
Upon the golden sands were coral plants | L |
And shells of many colours and sea weeds | M |
Whose foliage caught and chain'd the Nautilus | N |
Where lay they as at anchor On each side | O |
Were grottoes like fair porticoes with steps | P |
Of the green marble and a lovely light | Q |
Like the far radiance of a thousand lamps | R |
Half shine half shadow or the glorious track | S |
Of a departing star but faintly seen | T |
In the dim distance through those caverns shone | U |
And play'd o'er the tall trees which seem'd to hide | O |
Gardens where hyacinths rang their soft bells | V |
To call the bees from the anemone | U |
Jealous of their bright rivals' golden wealth | W |
Amid those arches floated starry shapes | X |
Just indistinct enough to make the eye | Y |
Dream of surpassing beauty but in front | Z |
Borne on a car of pearl and drawn by swans | A2 |
There lay a lovely figure she was queen | T |
Of the Enchanted Island which was raised | B2 |
From ocean's bosom but to pleasure her | C2 |
And spirits from the stars and from the sea | D2 |
The beautiful mortal had them for her slaves | E |
- | |
She was the daughter of a king and loved | E2 |
By a young Ocean Spirit from her birth | F2 |
He hover'd o'er her in her infancy | D2 |
And bade the rose grow near her that her cheek | G2 |
Might catch its colour lighted up her dreams | H2 |
With fairy wonders and made harmony | D2 |
The element in which she moved at last | I2 |
When that she turn'd away from earthly love | J2 |
Enamour'd of her visions he became | K2 |
Visible with his radiant wings and bore | L2 |
His bride to the fair island | M2 |
