I PRAY thee lay me not to restA
Among these mouldering bonesB
Too heavily the earth is prestA
By all these crowded stonesB
-
Life is too gay life is too nearC
With all its pomp and toilD
I pray thee do not lay me hereE
In such a world struck soilD
-
The ceaseless roll of wheels would wakeF
The slumbers of the deadG
I cannot bear for life to makeF
Its pathway o'er my headG
-
The flags around are cold and drearE
They stand apart aloneH
And no one ever pauses hereE
To sorrow for the goneI
-
No lay me in the far green fieldsJ
The summer sunshine cheersK
And where the early wild flower yieldsJ
The tribute of its tearsL
-
Where shadows the sepulchral yewM
Where droops the willow treeE
Where the long grass is filled with dewM
Oh make such grave for meE
-
And passers by at evening's closeN
Will pause beside the graveO
And moralize o'er the reposeP
They fear and yet they craveO
-
Perhaps some kindly hand may bringQ
Its offering to the tombR
And say As fades the rose in springQ
So fadeth human bloomR
-
But here there is no kindly thoughtS
To soothe and to relieveT
No fancies and no flowers are broughtS
That soften while they grieveT
-
Here Poesy and Love come notU
It is a world of stoneH
The grave is bought is closed forgotU
And then life hurries onV
-
Sorrow and beauty nature loveW
Redeem man's common breathX
Ah let them shed the grave aboveW
Give loveliness to deathX
