Love Nursed By Solitude. By W. I. Thomson, Edinburgh Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCC DDEEFFDDGGHHIIJKLLMM DDNNOOMMPPQQRR

AY surely it is here that Love should comeA
And find if he may find on earth a homeB
Here cast off all the sorrow and the shameC
That cling like shadows to his very nameC
-
Young Love thou art belied they speak of theeD
And couple with thy mention miseryD
Talk of the broken heart the wasted bloomE
The spirit blighted and the early tombE
As if these waited on thy golden lotF
They blame thee for the faults which thou hast notF
Art thou to blame for that they bring on theeD
The soil and weight of their mortalityD
How can they hope that ever links will holdG
Form'd as they form them now of the harsh goldG
Or worse than even this how can they thinkH
That vanity will bind the failing linkH
How can they dream that thy sweet life will bearI
Crowds' palaces' and cities' heartless airI
Where the lip smiles while the heart's desolateJ
And courtesy lends its deep mask to hateK
Where looks and thoughts alike must feel the chainL
And nought of life is real but its painL
Where the young spirit's high imaginingsM
Are scorn'd and cast away as idle thingsM
Where think or feel you are foredoom'd to beD
A marvel and a sign for mockeryD
Where none must wander from the beaten roadN
All alike champ the bit and feel the goadN
It is not made for thee young Love awayO
To where the green earth laughs to the clear dayO
To the deep valley where a thousand treesM
Keep a green court for fairy revelriesM
To some small island on a lonely lakeP
Where only swans the diamond waters breakP
Where the pines hang in silence oe'r the tideQ
And the stream gushes from the mountain sideQ
These Love are haunts for thee where canst thou broodR
With thy sweet wings furl'd but in SolitudeR
