Kate Kearney Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABACDDEFEF GHGHIIJKJK LMLNOO PQPQ

WHY doth the maiden turn awayA
From voice so sweet and words so dearB
Why doth the maiden turn awayA
When love and flattery woo her earC
And rarely that enchanted twainD
Whisper in woman's ear in vainD
Why doth the maiden leave the hallE
No face is fair as hers is fairF
No step has such a fairy fallE
No azure eyes like hers are thereF
-
The maiden seeks her lonely bowerG
Although her father's guests are metH
She knows it is the midnight hourG
She knows the first pale star is setH
And now the silver moon beams wakeI
The spirits of the haunted LakeI
The waves take rainbow hues and nowJ
The shining train are gliding byK
Their chieftain lifts his glorious browJ
The maiden meets his lingering eyeK
-
-
The glittering shapes melt into nightL
Another look their chief is goneM
And chill and gray comes morning's lightL
And clear and cold the Lake flows onN
Close close the casement not for sleepO
Over such visions eyes but weepO
-
How many share such destinyP
How many lured by fancy's beamQ
Ask the impossible to beP
And pine the victims of a dreamQ
