'We fly from the cold 'A
-
AWAY away o'er land and seaB
This is now no home for meB
My light wings may never bearC
Northern cloud or winter airC
Murky shades are gathering fastD
Sleet and snow are on the blastD
Trees from which the leaves are fledE
Flowers whose very roots are deadE
Grass of its green blade bereftF
These are all that now are leftF
Linger here another dayG
I shall be as sad as theyG
My companions fly with springH
I too must be on the wingH
-
Where are the sweet gales whose songI
Wont to waft my darts alongI
Scented airs oh not like theseJ
Rough as they which sweep the seasJ
But those sighs of rose which bringH
Incense from their wanderingH
Where are the bright flowers that keptK
Guard around me while I sleptK
-
Where the sunny eyes whose beamsL
Waken'd me from my soft dreamsL
These are with the swallows goneM
Beauty's heart is chill'd to stoneN
-
Oh for some sweet southern climeB
Where 'tis ever summer timeB
Where if blossoms fall their tombB
Is amid new birth of bloomB
Where green leaves are ever springingH
Where the lark is always singingH
One of those bright isles which lieO
Fair beneath an azure skyO
Isles of cinnamon and spiceP
Shadow each of ParadiseP
Where the flowers shine with dyesQ
Tinted bright from the sun riseQ
Where the birds which drink their dewR
Wave wings of yet brighter hueR
And each river's course is roll'dS
Over bed of pearl and goldS
-
Oh for those lime scented grovesT
Where the Spanish lover rovesT
Tuning to the western starU
His soft song and light guitarU
Where the dark hair'd girls are dancingH
Fairies in the moonlight glancingH
With pencill'd brows and radiant eyesT
Like their planet lighted skiesT
Or those clear Italian lakesT
Where the silver cygnet makesT
Its soft nest of leaf and flowerV
A white lily for its bowerV
-
Each of these a home would beB
Fit for beauty and for meB
I must seek their happier sphereW
While the Winter lords it hereX
