Children Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHIH JKLK MNON

A word will fill the little heartA
With pleasure and with prideB
It is a harsh a cruel thingC
That such can be deniedB
-
And yet how many weary hoursD
Those joyous creatures knowE
How much of sorrow and restraintF
They to their elders oweE
-
How much they suffer from our faultsG
How much from our mistakesH
How often too mistaken zealI
An infant's misery makesH
-
We overrule and overteachJ
We curb and we confineK
And put the heart to school too soonL
To learn our narrow lineK
-
No only taught by love to loveM
Seems childhood's natural taskN
Affection gentleness and hopeO
Are all its brief years askN
