A Suttee Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ JKJK LMAM NONO

GATHER her raven hair in one rich clusterA
Let the white champac light it as a starB
Gives to the dusky night a sudden lustreA
Shining afarB
-
Shed fragrant oils upon her fragrant bosomC
Until the breathing air around grows sweetD
Scatter the languid jasmine's yellow blossomC
Beneath her feetD
-
Those small white feet are bare too soft are theyE
To tread on aught but flowers and there is roll'dF
Round the slight ankle meet for such displayE
The band of goldF
-
Chains and bright stones are on her arms and neckG
What pleasant vanities are linked with themH
Of happy hours which youth delights to deckG
With gold and gemH
-
She comes So comes the Moon when she has foundI
A silvery path wherein thro' heaven to glideJ
Fling the white veil a summer cloud aroundI
She is a brideJ
-
And yet the crowd that gather at her sideJ
Are pale and every gazer holds his breathK
Eyes fill with tears unbidden for the brideJ
The bride of DeathK
-
She gives away the garland from her hairL
She gives the gems that she will wear no moreM
All the affections whose love signs they wereA
Are gone beforeM
-
The red pile blazes let the bride ascendN
And lay her head upon her husband's heartO
Now in a perfect unison to blendN
No more to partO
