The Friends. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGI JKJK LMLM NONO PLPL QRQR IBIB

We were friends and the warmest of friends he and IA
Each glance was a language that broke from the heartB
No cloudlet swept over the realm of the skyA
And beneath it we swore that we never would partB
-
Our fingers were clasped with the clasp of a friendC
Each bosom rebounded with youthful delightD
We were foremost to honour and strong to defendC
And Heaven beholding was charmed at the sightD
-
Around us the pine crested mountains were piledE
The sward in the vale was as down to the feetF
The far rolling woodlands were pathless and wildE
And Nature was garbed in a grandeur completeF
-
Said he We are here side by side and aloneG
Let us thus in the shade for a little remainH
For we may not return here ere boyhood is flownG
It may be we never shall meet so againI
-
Come friend and record on this reverend oakJ
Thy name by my own they shall stand side by sideK
And I hastened to do so with glee as he spokeJ
And I gazed on the names with a feeling of prideK
-
Traced deep on the bark they were goodly to seeL
What traced by the finger of Friendship is notM
Together they smiled on the trunk of the treeL
And as brothers we stood on that sanctified spotM
-
But alas for a murmur that swept through the treesN
For the sound was a sound as of something sadO
Like a wail that awakes in a breast ill at easeN
'Twas strange it should be so when all was so gladO
-
And often since then have I roamed through the valeP
My way have I bent to my favourite treeL
But its branches resound with the self same wailP
Which seems to repeat Where is he where is heL
-
And again and again have I loved to beholdQ
And fashion the storm beaten letters anewR
While lingering there as in summers of oldQ
That spot it is sweet it is dear to me tooR
-
Our steps ah how fond was our intercourse thenI
Like the leaves of the autumn have drifted apartB
And the voices that moan in that overgrown glenI
Now melt into weeping the sorrowful heartB
