Rutland Gate Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHIJ KLMN

His back is bent and his lips are blueA
Shivering out in the wetB
Here's a florin my man for youA
Go and get drunk and forgetB
-
Right in the midst of a Christian landC
Rotted with wealth and easeD
Broken and draggled they let him standC
Till his feet on the pavement freezeD
-
God leaves His poor in His vicars' careE
For He hears the church bells ringF
His ears are buzzing with constant prayerE
And the hymns His people singF
-
Can His pity picture the anguish hereG
Can He see through a London fogH
The man who has worked nigh seventy yearI
To die the death of a dogJ
-
No one heeds him the crowds pass onK
Why does he want to liveL
Take this florin and get you goneM
Go and get drunk and forgiveN
