Solvitur acris hyems grata vice verisA
-
-
Sharp winter now dissolv'd the linnet singB
The grateful breath of pleasing Zephyrs bringB
The welcome joys of long desired springB
The galleys now for open sea prepareC
The herds forsake their stalls for balmy airC
The fields adorn'd with green th'approaching sun declareC
In shining nights the charming Venus leadsA
Her troop of Graces and her lovely maidsA
Who gaily trip the ground in myrtle shadesA
The blazing forge her husband Vulcan heatsA
And thunderlike the labouring hammer beatsA
While toiling Cyclops every stroke repeatsA
Of myrtle new the cheerful wreath composeA
Of various flowers which opening spring bestowsA
Till coming June presents the blushing roseA
Pay your vow'd offering to God Faunus' bowerD
Then happy Sestius seize the present hourD
'Tis all that nature leaves to mortal powerD
The equal hand of strong impartial FateE
Levels the peasant and th'imperious greatE
Nor will that doom on human projects waitE
To the dark mansions of the senseless deadF
With daily steps our destin'd path we treadF
Realms still unknown of which so much is saidF
Ended your schemes of pleasure and of prideG
In joyous feasts no one will there presideG
Torn from your Lycidas' beloved sideG
Whose tender youth does now our eyes engageH
And soon will give in his maturer ageH
Sighs to our virgins to our matrons rageH
