An Elegy On Mrs. Thompson Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGHHIIHJ KKLLMM

Unhappy fair by fatal love betray'dA
Must then thy beauties thus untimely fadeA
And all thy blooming soft inspiring charmsB
Become a prey to Death's destructive armsB
Though short thy day and transient like the windC
How far more blest than those yet left behindC
Safe in the grave thy griefs with thee remainD
And life's tempestuous billows break in vainD
Ye tender nymphs in lawless pastimes gayE
Who heedless down the paths of pleasures strayE
Though long secure with blissful joys elateF
Yet pause and think of Arabella's fateF
For such may be your unexpected doomG
And your next pleasures lull you in the tombG
But let it be the muse's gentle careH
To shield from envy's rage the mould'ring fairH
To draw a veil o'er faults she can't defendI
And what prudes have devour'd leave time to endI
Be it her part to drop a pitying tearH
And mourning sigh around thy sable bierJ
Nor shall thy woes long glad th'ill natur'd crowdK
Silent to praise and in detraction loudK
When scandal that through life each worth destroysL
And malice that embitters all our joysL
Shall in some ill starr'd wretch find later stainsM
And let thine rest forgot as thy remainsM
