To that dear nymph whose pow'rful nameA
Does every throbbing nerve inflameA
As the soft sound I low repeatB
My pulse unequal measures beatB
Whose eyes I never more shall seeC
That once so sweetly shin'd on theeC
Go gentle wind and kindly bearD
My tender wishes to the fairD
Hoh ho ho cC
-
Amidst her pleasures let her knowE
The secret anguish of my woeE
The midnight pang the jealous hellF
Does in this tortur'd bosom dwellF
While laughing she and full of playG
Is with her young companions gayG
Or hearing in some fragrant bowerH
Her lover's sigh and beauty's powerH
Hoh ho ho cC
-
Lost and forgotten may I beC
Oh may no pitying thought of meC
Disturb the joy that she may findI
When love is crown'd and fortune kindI
May that bless'd swain whom yet I hateJ
Be proud of his distinguish'd fateJ
Each happy night be like the firstK
And he be bless'd as I am curs'dK
Hoh ho ho cC
-
While in these pathless woods I strayG
And lose my solitary wayG
Talk to the stars to trees complainL
And tell the senseless words my painL
But madness spares the sacred nameA
Nor dares the hidden wound proclaimA
Which secret rankling sure and slowE
Shall close in endless peace my woeE
Hoh ho ho cC
-
When this fond heart shall ache no moreM
And all the ills of life are o'erH
If gods by lovers' prayers are mov'dN
As ev'ry god in heaven has lov'dO
Instead of bright Elysian joysP
That unknown something in the skiesQ
In recompense of all my painL
The only heaven I'd obtainL
May I the guardian of her charmsR
Preserve that paradise from harmsR
Hoh ho ho cC
