I wasA
And I amB
So shall I be to the end of timeC
For I am without endD
-
I have cleft the vast spaces of the infinite andE
Taken flight in the world of fantasy and drawn nighF
To the circle of light on highF
Yet behold me a captive of matterG
I have hearkened to the teachings of ConfuciusH
And listened to the wisdom of Brahma and satI
Beside the Buddha beneath the tree of knowledgeJ
Behold me now contending with ignorance andE
UnbelievingK
-
I was upon Sinai when the Lord showed HimselfL
To Moses By the Jordan I beheld the Nazarene'sH
Miracles In Medina I heard the words of theM
Apostle of ArabiaM
-
Behold me now a prisoner of doubtN
I have seen Babylon's strength and Egypt's gloryO
And the greatness of Greece My eyes cease notP
Upon the smallness and poverty of their worksH
I have sat with the witch of Endor and the priestsH
Of Assyria and the prophets of Palestine and I ceaseH
Not to chant the truthQ
-
I have learned the wisdom that descended onR
India and gained mastery over poetry that welledP
From the Arabian's heart and hearkened to theM
Music of people from the WestP
Yet am I blind and see not my ears are stoppedP
And I do not hearS
-
I have borne the harshness of insatiableT
Conquerors and felt the oppression of tyrants and theM
bondage of the powerfulT
Yet am I strong to do battle with the daysH
All this have I heard and seen and I am yet aM
Child In truth shall I hear and see the deeds ofU
Youth and grow old and attain perfection andP
Return to GodP
-
I wasH
And I amB
So shall I be to the end of timeC
For I am without endP
