I saw the Nazarene's miracles at the JordanM
I was in Medina when Mohammed visitedN
Yet I here I am prisoner of bewildermentG

Then I witnessed the might of BabylonO
I learned of the glory of EgyptP
I viewed the warring greatness of RomeQ
Yet my earlier teachings showed theA
Weakness and sorrow of those achievementsR

I conversed with the magicians of Ain DourS
I debated with the priests of AssyriaA
I gleaned depth from the prophets of PalestineT
Yet I am still seeking truthU

I gathered wisdom from quiet IndiaA
I probed the antiquity of ArabiaA
I heard all that can be heardV
Yet my heart is deaf and blindW

I suffered at the hands of despotic rulersX
I suffered slavery under insane invadersX
I suffered hunger imposed by tyrannyL
Yet I still possess some inner powerS
With which I struggle to greet each dayY
