Give me the flute and singA
immortality lies in a songB
and even after we've perishedC
the flute continues to lamentD
have you taken refuge in the woodsE
away from places like meF
followed streams on their coursesG
and climbed up the rocksH
Did you ever bathe in a perfumeI
and dry yourself with a lightJ
drink the dawn as wineK
rarefied in goblets of etherL
give me the flute then and singA
the best of prayer is songB
and even when life perishesH
the flute continues to lamentD
have you spent an eveningA
as I have doneM
among vinesH
where the golden candelabraN
clusters hang downO
did you sleep on the grass at nightJ
and let space be your blanketP
abstaining from all that will comeQ
forgetful of all that has passedR
give the flute then and singA
in singing is Justice for the heartS
and even after every guiltT
has perishedC
the flute continues to lamentD
give the flute and singA
forget illness and its cureU
people are nothing but linesH
which are scribbled on waterL
They all are but the tunnels of molesH
threads in the spider's webV
For he who lives in weaknessH
slowly he will dieW
Forest is the abode of lifeX
and were the daysH
gathered in my handY
there would i strew themZ
but time it is that choosesH
from my soul whenever i long forA2
forest time bars my way woth excuseH
the fates have ways unalteringA
and men's aims areB2
beyond their impotent reachC2
