It is the hither side O HopeA
And afternoon our shadows slopeA
Backward along the mountain copeA
-
The early morning was so sweetB
We seemed to climb with winged feetB
Like moving vapors fine and fleetB
-
Not more elastic poised and swungC
Harebell or yellow adder's tongueC
Nor blither any bird that sungC
-
Thy light foot bent not any stemD
Of frailest plant whose diademD
In passing kissed thy garment's hemD
-
O Hope so near me and so brightE
Thy foot above me on the heightE
I might not touch thy garments whiteE
-
Thy lifted face so fair so raptF
Like sunshine rolled and overlappedF
Cliff slope and tall peak thunder cappedF
-
Thy voice to me like silver brooksG
Down dropped from secret mountain nooksG
Still drew me like thy radiant looksG
-
Nor scorching sun nor beating rainH
Nor soil nor grime nor travel stainH
With thee were weariness or painH
-
But now it is the afternoonI
Behind the mountain summit's gloomJ
Before night's shadows gather soonI
-
O Hope where art thou rough and steepK
The way has grown I faint and weepK
Beside me torrents toss and leapK
-
And far below unseen for tearsL
The river where life disappearsM
Uplifts its thunder to my earsM
-
Canst thou with thy serener eyesN
Over the flood God's paradiseO
Behold in awful beauty riseN
-
Far off I seem to see thee standP
Shading rapt eyes with radiant handP
To scan that unknown glorious landP
-
The glory of that unseen placeQ
Gathers and brightens o'er thy faceQ
And fills thy looks with tender graceQ
-
O Hope divine ' I would beholdR
Those shining spires those streets of goldR
But ah the waves are deadly coldR
-
I hear the thunder and the sweepK
Of waves deep calleth unto deepK
The pathway ends abrupt and steepK
-
Yet soft beside that solemn shoreS
I hear thy voice above its roarS
Life is a dream and it is o'erT
-
The night is past behold the dayU
O new born soul O child of clayU
O bird uncaged and still astrayU
-
Take through the universe thy roadV
All paths lead up to His abodeV
Converging at the Mount of GodW
