In the sleep haunted gloomA
Born of the slumbrous twilight in these shadesB
These vast and venerable collonadesB
I welcome thee dear JuneC
-
And while with head reclinedD
And limbs aweary with my woodland walkE
I listen to the low melodious talkE
Of leaves and singing windD
-
The merry roundelayF
Of the swart ploughman sowing summer grainG
And tinkling sheep bell on the distant plainG
And pastures far awayH
-
Come with a soft refrainG
Like a faint echo from the outer worldI
While Peace sits by me with her white wings furledI
Within my green domainG
-
This is my palace whereJ
Great trunks are amber pillars to supportI
The blue roof of the vast and silent courtI
In clustered columns fairJ
-
And underneath the bloomA
Of water lilies through the fragrant nightI
Of these dim arches spreads a perfumed lightI
Even at highest noonC
-
Down dropping all day longK
With a most musical cadence in the hallF
A wandering stream lets its slow waters fallF
In twinkling rhythmic songK
-
Hither the vagrant beeL
From the broad fields and sunshine all astrayH
Loiters the idle hours of noon awayH
In golden dreams like meL
-
And from my window frameM
This oriel window opening on the skyN
I see the white barques of the clouds drift byN
With prows of rosy flameM
-
Fantastical and strangeO
Their purple sails go floating o'er the deepP
Like shadows through the summer land of sleepP
In never ending changeO
-
The wild shy things which roamQ
The woods and live in bough and tree and grotI
Flutter and chirp unscared they fear me notI
For I too am at homeQ
-
And feel my heart in tuneC
With the great heart of Nature and the voiceB
Of all the glad bright creatures that rejoiceB
In the green woods of JuneC
