The Watch-light Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBA CDDC EFFE BGGB HIIH JKKJ LMM NKLN OPQO DRRD BSST

Above the roofs and chimney topsA
And through the slow November rainB
A light from some far attic paneB
Shines twinkling through the water dropsA
-
Some lonely watcher waits and weepsC
Like me the step that comes not yetD
Her watch for weary hours is setD
While far below the city sleepsC
-
The level lamp rays lay the floorsE
And bridge the dark that lies belowF
O'er which my fancies come and goF
And peep and listen at the doorsE
-
And bring me word how sweet and plainB
And quaint the lonely attic roomG
Where she sits singing in the gloomG
Words sadder than the autumn rainB
-
A thousand times by sea and shoreH
In my wild dreams I see him lieI
With face upturned toward the skyI
Murdered and stiffening in his goreH
-
Or drowned and floating with the tideJ
Within some lonely midnight bayK
His arms stretched toward me where he layK
And blue eyes staring fixed and wideJ
-
Oh winds that rove o'er land and seaL
Oh waves that lap the yellow sandsM
Oh hide your stealthy treacherous handsM
And call no more his name to me '-
-
Thus much I heard and unawaresN
The sense of pity stole awayK
My loneliness and miseryL
When lo a light step on the stairsN
-
Ah joy the step that brings my ownO
Safe from all harms and dangers inP
My heart lifts up its thankful hymnQ
And bids' good night to night and moanO
-
I sleep I rest and I forgetD
The bridge the night lamp's level beamsR
Till waiting out of happy dreamsR
I see her watch light shining yetD
-
God comfort those that watch in vainB
I breathe to Him my voiceless prayerS
Pity their tears and their despairS
And bring the wanderers home againT
