Sundown and silence and deep peaceA
Night's benediction and releaseA
The tints of day die out and ceaseA
-
This morn I heard the Sabbath bellsB
Across the breezy upland swellsB
My path lay down the woodland dellsB
-
To day I said the dust of creedsB
The wind of words reach not my needsB
I worship with the birds and weedsB
-
From height to height the sunbeam sprungC
The wild vine touched with vermeil clungC
The mountain brooklet leapt and sungC
-
The white lamp of the lily madeD
A tender light in deepest shadeD
The solitary place was gladE
-
The very air was tremulousB
I felt its deep and reverent hushF
God burned before me in the bushG
-
And nature prayed with folded palmH
And looks that wear perpetual calmH
The while glad notes uplifted psalmI
-
The wild rose swung her fragrant vaseB
The daisy answered from her placeB
Praise Him whose looks are full of graceB
-
And violets murmured where the feetJ
Of brooks made hollows cool and deepK
He giveth His beloved sleepK
-
Wide stood the great cathedral doorsB
Arched o'er with heaven's radiant floorsB
Nature with lifted brow adoresB
-
And wave and wind and rocking treesB
And voice of birds and hum of beesB
Made anthem like the roll of seasB
-
The sunset vapors sail and swimL
All day uprose their mighty hymnL
I listened till the woods were dimL
-
And through the beechen aisles there fellM
A silver silence like a spellM
The heifer's home returning bellM
-
Faint and remote as if it grewN
A portion of that silence tooN
Dissolved and ceased like falling dewN
-
Stars twinkled through the coming nightO
A voice dropped down the purple heightO
At even time it shall he lightO
-
Ah rest my soul for God is goodP
Though sometimes faintly understoodP
His goodness fills the solitudeQ
-
Fold up thy spirit trust the rightO
As blossoms fold their leaves at nightO
And trust the sun though out of sightO
