I have been where the roses blowA
Where the orange ripens its goldB
And the mountains stand with their peaks of snowA
To fence away the coldB
Where the lime and the myrtle lentC
Their fragrance to the airD
To make the land of my banishmentE
More exquisitely fairD
-
And I heard the ring dove callF
To his mate in the blossoming treesG
And I saw the white waves heave and fallF
Far away over southern seasG
I listened along the beachH
By the shore of the shifting seaI
To the waves till I knew their murmured speechH
And the message they bore to meI
-
And I watched the great sails furledE
Like the wings of some ocean birdE
That brought me out of another worldE
A warning and a wordE
For still beside my wayJ
By shore or sunlit waveK
There journeyed with me night and dayJ
The shadow of a graveK
-
Oh friends my heart went forthL
To you with a yearning cryM
To be taken back to my native NorthL
To be taken home to dieM
For sweeter than southern sunsN
Or the blossoms of summer landsO
Are the faces of my little onesN
And the touch of their tender handsO
-
Come closer to my sideE
Your eyes are as clear and trueP
As if they were stars my way to guideE
My darlings back to youP
Oh God my heart is stirredE
With thankfulness and restE
To reach at last like a wounded birdE
The shelter of its nestE
-
Oh faint pulse throbbing longQ
And weary and fluttering breathR
Twas the mother love that kept you strongQ
Though face to face with deathR
But now my eyes are dimS
And my breath comes weak and slowA
Sing to me softly the evening hymnS
And kiss me ere I goA
-
Come close for the angel waitsT
The angel with gentle handE
To open for me the shadowy gatesT
Into the silent landE
Oh voices sweet and clearU
What light is in the skiesV
Is it your glad voices that I hearW
Or the hymns of paradiseX
-
Farewell your faces fadeE
Fade fade and disappearU
In the light no earthly cloud may shadeE
Heaven's morning dawning clearU
Oh land of rest so fairD
By angel footsteps trodE
I shall wait for you beloved thereD
In the paradise of GodE
