Moss grown and venerable it standsA
From the way side dust and noise aloofB
And the great elms stretch their sheltering handsA
To bless its grey old roofB
-
About it summer's greenery wavesC
The birds build fearless overheadD
Its shadow falls among the gravesC
Around it sleep the deadD
-
The summer sunshine softly takesE
The chancel window's pictured gloomF
The moonlight enters too and makesE
The shadow of a tombF
-
Along these aisles the bride hath passedG
And brightened with her innocent graceH
The pensive twilight years have castG
About the holy placeH
-
They brought her here a tiny maidI
Unweeting any gain or lossJ
And on her baby forehead laidI
The symbol of the CrossJ
-
And here they brought her once againK
White robed and smiling as she sleptL
While lips that trembled breathed her nameM
And eyes that saw her weptL
-
And still when sunset lights his fireN
Along the gold and crimsoned westO
She sleeps beneath the shadowing spireP
The cross upon her breastO
-
I watch it from my lonely cotQ
When stars shine o'er the hallowed groundR
And think there is no sweeter spotQ
The whole wide earth aroundR
-
The Sabbath chimes there sink and swimS
Along the consecrated airT
The benediction and the hymnS
The voice of praise and prayerT
-
These mingle with the wind's free songU
The hum of bees the notes of birdsV
And make an anthem sweet and strongU
Of inarticulate wordsV
-
There let me rest when I have foundR
The peace of God the immortal calmW
Where still above my sleep profoundR
Goes up the Sabbath psalmX
