Under the bare brown raftersA
In his garret bed he layB
And dreamed of the bright hereaftersA
And the merry morns of MayB
-
The snow flakes slowly siftedC
In through each cranny and seamD
But only the sunshine driftedE
Into the news boy's dreamD
-
For he dreamed of the brave to morrowsA
His eager eyes should scanF
When battling with wants and sorrowsA
He felt himself a ManF
-
He felt his heart grow bolderG
For the struggle and the strifeH
When shoulder joined to shoulderG
In the battle field of lifeH
-
And instead of the bare brown raftersA
And the snowflakes sifting inI
He saw in the glad hereaftersA
The home his hands should winI
-
The flowers that grew in its shadowJ
And the trees that drooped aboveK
The low of the kine in the meadowJ
And the coo of the morning doveK
-
And dearer and more tenderG
He saw his mother thereL
As she knelt in the sunset splendourL
To say the evening prayerL
-
His face the sun had burned itM
And his hands were rough and hardN
But home he had fairly earned itM
And this was his rewardO
-
The morning star's faint glimmerL
Stole into the garret forlornP
And touched the face of the dreamerL
With the light of a hope new bornP
-
Oh ring harmonious voicesA
Of New Year's welcoming bellsA
For the very air rejoicesA
Through all its sounding cellsA
-
I greet ye oh friends and neighboursA
The smith and the artizanP
I share in your honest laboursA
A Canadian working manP
-
To wield the axe or the hammerL
To till the yielding soilQ
Enroll me under your bannerL
Oh Brotherhood of ToilQ
-
Ring bells of the brave to morrowsA
And bring the time more nearL
Ring out the wants and the sorrowsA
Ring in the glad New YearL
