Thanksgiving Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD ECEC CFCF CGCG CHCH DIDJThe Autumn hills are golden at the top | A |
And rounded as a poet's silver rhyme | B |
The mellow days are ruby ripe that drop | A |
One after one into the lap of time | B |
- | |
Dead leaves are reddening in the woodland copse | C |
And forest boughs a fading glory wear | D |
No breath of wind stirs in their hazy tops | C |
Silence and peace are brooding everywhere | D |
- | |
The long day of the year is almost done | E |
And nature in the sunset musing stands | C |
Gray robed and violet hooded like a nun | E |
Looking abroad o'er yellow harvest lands | C |
- | |
O'er tents of orchard boughs and purple vines | C |
With scarlet flecked flung like broad banners out | F |
Along the field paths where slow pacing lines | C |
Of meek eyed kine obey the herdboy's shout | F |
- | |
Where the tired ploughman his dun oxen turns | C |
Unyoked afield mid dewy grass to stray | G |
While over all the village church spire burns | C |
A shaft of flame in the last beams of day | G |
- | |
Empty and folded are her busy hands | C |
Her corn and wine and oil are safely stored | H |
As in the twilight of the year she stands | C |
And with her gladness seems to thank the Lord | H |
- | |
Thus let us rest awhile from toil and care | D |
In the sweet sabbath of this autumn calm | I |
And lift our hearts to heaven in grateful prayer | D |
And sing with nature our thanksgiving psalm | J |
