Thanksgiving Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD ECEC CFCF CGCG CHCH DIDJ

The Autumn hills are golden at the topA
And rounded as a poet's silver rhymeB
The mellow days are ruby ripe that dropA
One after one into the lap of timeB
-
Dead leaves are reddening in the woodland copseC
And forest boughs a fading glory wearD
No breath of wind stirs in their hazy topsC
Silence and peace are brooding everywhereD
-
The long day of the year is almost doneE
And nature in the sunset musing standsC
Gray robed and violet hooded like a nunE
Looking abroad o'er yellow harvest landsC
-
O'er tents of orchard boughs and purple vinesC
With scarlet flecked flung like broad banners outF
Along the field paths where slow pacing linesC
Of meek eyed kine obey the herdboy's shoutF
-
Where the tired ploughman his dun oxen turnsC
Unyoked afield mid dewy grass to strayG
While over all the village church spire burnsC
A shaft of flame in the last beams of dayG
-
Empty and folded are her busy handsC
Her corn and wine and oil are safely storedH
As in the twilight of the year she standsC
And with her gladness seems to thank the LordH
-
Thus let us rest awhile from toil and careD
In the sweet sabbath of this autumn calmI
And lift our hearts to heaven in grateful prayerD
And sing with nature our thanksgiving psalmJ
