Miserere Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBAC DEEDC FGGFC HIIHC JKKKJC

Be pitiful oh God the night is longA
My soul is faint with watching for the lightB
And still the gloom and doubt of seven fold nightB
Hangs heavy on my spirit Thou art strongA
Pity me oh my GodC
-
I stretch my hands through darkness up to TheeD
The stars are shrouded and the night is dumbE
There is no earthly help to Thee I comeE
In all my helplessness and miseryD
Pity me oh my GodC
-
Be pitiful oh God for I am weakF
And all my paths are rough and hedged aboutG
Hold Thou my hand dear Lord and lead me outG
And bring me to the city which I seekF
Pity me oh my GodC
-
By the temptation which Thou didst endureH
And by Thy fasting and Thy midnight prayerI
Jesu let me not utterly despairI
Oh hide me in the Rock from ill secureH
Pity me oh my GodC
-
Mine eyes run down with tears that do not ceaseJ
Oh when beyond the river dark and coldK
Shall I the white walls of my home beholdK
The shining palaces the streets of goldK
And enter through the gates the City of PeaceJ
Pity me oh my GodC
