Into the west the day goes downA
Smiling and fading into the nightB
Is it a cross or is it a crownA
I have worn through all these hours of lightB
-
Bending over my milk white curdsC
In my dairy under the beechD
Still the thought of my heart took wordsC
And murmured itself in musical speechD
-
And all my pans of golden creamE
Set in a silver shining rowF
Swam in my eyes like the shimmer and sheenG
Of arms and banners and martial showF
-
The bee in his gold laced uniformH
Drilled the ranks of clover bloomsC
And carried my very heart by stormH
Mocking the roll of the distant drumsC
-
But something choked my singing downA
Deeper than any song expressedI
Is it a cross or is it a crownA
On my brow invisibly pressedI
-
Out of the east the star watch shinesC
Lighting their camp fires in the grayJ
I count their white tents' lengthening linesC
And think of those who are far awayJ
-
Where the yellow globes of the orange growF
In the southern fields that slope to the sunK
Oh say have my brothers met the foeF
Has another Shiloh been lost or wonK
-
For when the moonlight falls acrossC
The threshold of our cottage doorL
My heart is full of a sense of lossC
As if they would return no moreL
-
Last year when the April days were fairM
And the harvest fields were ploughed and sownN
Two stalwart boys took each his shareM
But now our father toils aloneN
-
And often at our evening prayersC
With an absence I can understandO
I see him look at the vacant chairsC
And wipe his brow with his wrinkled handO
-
And therefore at the fireside nookP
Kneeling sadly at night to prayJ
All the light of the holy bookP
Seems to fall and point one wayJ
-
And therefore tending my milk white curdsC
Still the song that my fancy humsC
Catches the glitter of martial wordsC
And sets itself to the beat of drumsC
