At last dear love the day is goneA
The doors are barred the lamps are litB
The couch beside the fire is drawnA
The nook whore thou wert wont to sitB
-
The book is open at the placeC
And half its leaves are still uncutD
And yet without thy listening faceC
I cannot read the book I shutD
-
And muse and dream it is the dayE
When lovers silent all the yearF
Find tongues in floral tokens gayE
To whisper all they long to hearG
-
Ah many a time and many a timeH
I saw the question in thine eyesI
Where is the silver sounding rhymeH
The simple household melodiesJ
-
The harp that trembled to thy touchK
Hast thou forgot thine early loreL
And know'st not that I love so muchK
That song contents my heart no moreL
-
For thou hast made my life so sweetM
With dainty gifts thy dear hands bringN
Rich with thine affluence and completeM
I have no longing left to singN
-
And yet I have such vast desiresO
Such thirst for some great destinyP
That all the poet's weaker firesO
Burn into prophecies for theeP
-
The circle of our home could makeQ
The boundaries of my world but thineR
So splendid is for thy dear sakeQ
I fain would push the bounds of mineR
-
For this I study as I mayE
To walk with thee the world of mindS
To follow where thou lead'st the wayE
A step but just a step behindS
-
Thy hand in mine thine earnest eyesI
Fixed ever on the radiant goalT
Together shall we climb the skiesI
And mingle there one perfect soulT
