Not much of a dog yetA
that smudge in the distance beyond the reachB

of focus It's just an impressionistC
gesture a guess From the edge of the clearing the farmhouseD
materializes settlesE

into wall amp stone The waterF
making the surfaceG

of the stream makesH
reflections So why shouldn't the dogI
-
accept limits becomeJ
-
a figure Is it like the girl who sitsK
in the hall closet and says she's notL
hiding She's insideM
-
listening without the burdenN
of sight letting locationsO
release hold Out of bodyP
they seem lighter her parents' voices no longerF
-
hooked to their mouths They seemQ
cleaner Even the electric can openerF
the sounds of childrenN
-
that rise from the yard and fall the openingR
window these are no longerF
-
effects things expectedS
of a subject and verb The world anyhow is tooT
straightforwardU
-
Maybe the dogI
does not want to be a dog does not wantV
to be turned into landscapeW
-
but to remain in the beginning placelessO
-
with the wind opening the windX
a vowel and the stars and watersO
that flash recoil and retchB
-
unnamed as yet unformed unfoundX
