There was snow that afternoon covering the roadA
which twisted toward the secretB
of water the mysterious surgeC
-
of sludge amp loam the livingD
Mississippi unlike the rest of the MidwestE
-
drawing itself through landscape There was an appointmentF
you were keepingD
-
in Moline a cheap hotel booze a little blow On the LowerG
East Side a womanH
-
spills her martini makes a gestureG
like erasure or regret It was almost ChristmasI
In the rear viewJ
-
suddenly the car you will always describe as oncomingD
must have slipped into a skidK
-
and now rising up over the bankL
it startles you that reflection In MolineM
-
the maid corners the bed straightens the cleanM
line of sheet Almost Christmas On the roadA
swirls of snow On the roadA
-
the car hovering behind you a witnessI
unfortunate amp so unlike the audience permittedN
the distance of fictions the artificeO
-
of plot And worse of course the lawP
-
of cause amp effect I looked upQ
it started to fall You must attachR
-
subject to verb must sayS
I saw and did in your rear view the car you d thoughtT
nothing ofU
-
the gray sedan lifting slowly from the common snowV
turning and the accidentF
always there about to happenH
