He drew a straight lineA
Across the dirt floorB
Within it was death stillC
Without was a roarB
And a scream of the trumpetsD
Within was a WordE
And a line drawn cleanF
By the sweep of a swordG
No help was coming nowH
That hope was doneI
No more the free airJ
no more the sunI
Bright on the blue leaguesK
Of buffalo cloverL
Travis drew a lineA
And they all crossed overL
Travis had a wife at homeM
Travis was youngN
Travis had a little boyO
Whose tight arms clungN
But Travis saw a far lightP
Shining beforeB
Travis drew a sword cutQ
Across the dirt floorB
-
And now the old fort standsR
Placid and dimS
Blinking and dreamingT
Of them and of himS
And now past the PlazaU
Other tides roarB
since Travis wrote ValorL
Across the sand floorB
And the guns they will rustV
And the captains will goW
And an end come at lastX
To the wars that we knowW
But as long as there travailsY
A Spirit in manZ
In a war that was ancientA2
Before Time beganZ
Here will the brave comeB2
To read a high WordE
Cut clean in the dustV
By the stroke of a swordG
