Tribute To Oliver Wendell Holmes Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCDDEEFF GGHDDH IIJKKJ LLHMMN OOCPPC

Thou metamorphic godA
Who mak'st the straight Olympus thy abodeB
Hermes to subtle laughter movingC
Apollo with serener lovingC
Thou demi god alsoD
Who dost all the powers of healing knowD
Thou hero who dost wieldE
The golden sword and shieldE
Shield of a comprehensive mindF
And sword to wound the foes of human kindF
-
Thou man of noble mouldG
Whose metal grows not coldG
Beneath the hammer of the hurrying yearsH
A fiery breath doth blowD
Across its fervid glowD
And still its resonance delights our earsH
-
Loved of thy brilliant matesI
Relinquished to the fatesI
Whose spirit music used to chime with thineJ
Transfigured in our sightK
Not quenched in death's dark nightK
They hold thee in companionship divineJ
-
O autocratic museL
Soul rainbow of all huesL
Packed full of service are thy bygone yearsH
Thy winged steed doth flyM
Across the starry skyM
Bearing the lowly burthens of thy tearsN
-
I try this little leapO
Wishing that from the deepO
I might some pearl of song adventurous bringC
Despairing here I stopP
And my poor offering dropP
Why stammer I when thou art here to singC
