The crimson flower of battle blooms | A |
And solemn marches fill the night | C |

Drooped heavy o er our early dead | E |
And homely garments coarse and gray | D |
For orphans that must earn their bread | E |

Keep back your tunes ye viols sweet | F |
That poured delight from other lands | G |
Rouse there the dancer s restless feet | F |
The trumpet leads our warrior bands | G |

And ye that wage the war of words | H |
With mystic fame and subtle power | I |
Go chatter to the idle birds | H |
Or teach the lesson of the hour | I |

Ye Sibyl Arts in one stern knot | J |
Be all your offices combined | K |
Stand close while Courage draws the lot | J |
The destiny of human kind | K |

And if that destiny could fail | L |
The sun should darken in the sky | M |
The eternal bloom of Nature pale | L |
And God and Truth and Freedom die | M |
