Willie and Nellie one evening satA
By their own little cottage doorB
They saw a man go staggering byC
Says Willie that's Mr LanoreB
He is just going home from town whereB
He has been in a saloonD
When Maggie and I came from schoolE
Said Maggie 'please papa come home 'F
-
She asked him again again to come homeG
At last he got angry and saidH
'Maggie go home don't bother me soI
Go home now and shut up your head '-
Poor girl she came weeping all the wayJ
As though her poor heart would breakK
She could not play not a word would sayJ
With playmates no pleasure could takeK
-
'Tis the same child Willie repliedL
I'm sorry for Maggie LanoreB
I wish her papa would sign the pledgeM
And try to be a man once moreB
He drinks up all the money he earnsN
In whiskey rum gin and beerB
His home is a home of povertyO
Made so by his own careerB
-
Says Nellie I wish Mr LanoreB
Would go to the meeting to nightP
And hear the temperance lectureB
Then perhaps he would try to do rightP
One more little home of happinessQ
Would be in our midst I am sureB
Then Maggie Lanore could say with joyR
'My papa don't drink any more '-
-
Said Nellie I told her never mindS
We would be her friends evermoreB
I hoped her papa would sign the pledgeM
Then he would not drink any moreB
Then smiling through her tears she saidH
'The temperance pledge you meanT
If papa would sign it then mammaU
And I will take comfort I ween '-
-
I wonder says Nellie can it beO
The same child I saw go to schoolE
She wore ragged clothes I saw her toesV
Were peeping out of her old shoesW
She has curly hair and mild blue eyesX
Can this child be Maggie LanoreB
If it is her I sincerely wishY
Her papa won't drink any moreB
