Come all you friends and criticsA
And listen to my songB
A word I will say to youC
It will not take me longB
The people talks about meD
They've nothing else to doC
But to criticise their neighborsE
And they have me now in viewC
-
Perhaps they talk for meannessF
And perhaps it is in jestG
If they leave out their freenessF
It would suit me now the bestG
To keep the good old maximH
I find it hard to doC
That is to do to othersF
As you wish them do to youC
-
Perhaps you've read the papersF
Containing my interviewC
I hope you kind good peopleI
Will not believe it trueC
Some Editors of the papersF
They thought it would be wiseF
To write a column about meD
So they filled it up with liesF
-
The papers have ridiculed meD
A year and a half or moreJ
Such slander as the interviewC
I never read beforeJ
Some reporters and editorsF
Are versed in telling liesF
Others it seems are willingK
To let industry riseF
-
The people of good judgmentL
Will read the papers throughC
And not rely on its truthM
Without a candid viewC
My first attempt at literatureN
Is the Sweet Singer by nameO
I wrote that book without a thoughtP
Of the future or of fameO
-
Dear Friends I write for moneyD
With a kind heart and handQ
I wish to make no EnemiesF
Throughout my native landQ
Kind friends now I close my rhymeR
And lay my pen asideS
Between me and my criticsF
I leave you to decideS
