How well do I rememberA
Of a burial in the snowB
On a winter's eveningC
Some fifteen years agoB
The ground was covered overA
With the beautiful crystal snowB
And it glistened in the moonlightD
Like diamonds all aglowB
-
It was a pleasant eveningC
That merry Christmas eveE
And I never can forget howF
The frost hung on the treeG
The moon was shining clearlyG
And the sleigh bells rang so sweetH
Ah it was splendid sleighingC
The snow was two feet deepI
-
My grandparents were livingC
Some two miles then awayJ
My parents went to see themK
To spend the holidayJ
I went with my kind parentsL
For the evening was sublimeM
To see dear aunts and unclesN
And have a merry timeM
-
I saw the beaming facesO
Of my grandparents dearP
As they met us on the door stepQ
With welcome words of cheerP
In fancy I can see themK
As in the days of yoreR
When they welcome home their childrenS
Through the old familiar doorR
-
The banquet board that eveningC
Was filled with cake and wineT
Delicious fruits and oystersU
That came from foreign climeK
It was a merry partyG
That met once more to roamK
My grandparents were happyG
Their children were all homeK
-
Grandpapa said dear childrenS
Lay the tea things asideV
And some of you get readyG
To take a pleasant rideV
The moon is shining clearlyG
The evening is sublimeK
O'er the crystal snow we'll glideV
And have a jolly timeK
-
Hats and cloaks were soon put onW
By those who wish to goC
They were wrapped up snug and warmK
For a sleigh ride o'er the snowC
Their hearts were light and gleefulX
They rode away with easeY
I never can forget themK
Or that merry Christmas eveE
-
On that beautiful eveningC
They rode five miles awayJ
O'er hills and dales and frozen snowC
With prospects bright and gayJ
They came to their journey's endZ
And soon were homeward boundA2
A more joyous happy bandB2
Was nowhere to be foundA2
-
The merry sleigh bells ringingC
Out on the midnight airC2
And merry voices singingC
All right side up with careC2
The horses were high spiritedD2
They ran away and loC
Broke loose from the sleigh and leftE2
It buried in the snowC
-
The people of that partyG
Lay scattered all aroundA2
Some were frightened others laughedF2
To think it happened soC
That the end of their sleigh rideV
Was a burial in the snowC
-
Yet they were gay and happyG
The bright moon o'er them shoneG2
And laughing o'er their sleigh rideV
They all went trudging homeK
Some of those friends are dead and goneH2
That met in that old homeK
And never will we meet againI2
Around that dear hearth stoneG2
