In a southern city lived a wealthy familyA
In a southern city was the happy homeB
Of a father and mother and a little daughterC
In peace and contentment they lived aloneD
-
But one summer evening there happened a misfortuneE
Which caused the parents to weep and mournF
For this little daughter a loving little treasureC
Was a poor little wanderer far far from homeB
-
It happened thus the mother went out callingG
On a widow friend who lived all aloneD
She left her little daughter in the care of her fatherC
And through his neglect she wandered from homeB
-
The father rocked his child till her eyes closed in slumberC
Thought he to himself I'll go over across the wayH
And see a neighbor friend he'll be there this eveningG
And I must see him before he goes awayH
-
He left his little one he supposed sweetly sleepingG
In her little cradle in the house aloneD
And in his great hurry he left the gate ajarI
This thoughtlessness caused destruction to his homeB
-
Soon after he was gone she awoke from her slumberC
Poor child she then found herself all aloneD
For no one was there no one heard her weepingG
As she wandered away far far from homeB
-
She wandered along on the busy thoroughbareC
No one seemed to notice this little one aloneD
She wandered down Broadway till the little feet were tiredJ
This poor little wanderer far away from homeB
-
At last getting weary she sat down on the pavementK
And soon fell asleep so tired had she grownD
In her troubled sleep she would softly murmur papaL
This poor little lost one so far away from homeB
-
A policeman came along and saw her sweetly sleepingG
On the pavement at midnight aloneD
He gently picked her up and took her to the stationE
This poor little wanderer far away from homeB
-
He advertised but could not find her parentsM
At last he took her to the orphan homeB
Where she lived till a farmer in the countryC
Took her to live with him this wanderer aloneD
-
The father died o'er the loss of his daughterC
The mother sought for her three years aloneD
At last she found her with kind people in the countryC
Her poor little wanderer far away from homeB
-
Kind people can imagine the joy of the motherC
When she found her little loving oneE
Oh God exclaimed the mother I have found my little AliceN
My poor little wanderer far away from homeB
