i Air The Soldier's Orphan Boy iA
-
-
Down south the Libby prison stoodB
The rebel's filthy denC
Rebs in battle prisoners tookD
Of course our union menC
And our brave boys hearty and haleE
To prison had to goF
And few have lived to tell the taleE
Of misery and woeF
-
This prison was a horrid placeG
Many brave boys died thereH
In rags and filth and wretchednessG
They died for want of careH
Many a brave and noble manI
As he lay sick and soreJ
Was thinking of his friends and homeK
He never would see moreJ
-
Fathers brothers young husbands dearL
Went through that prison doorJ
Some lived to return home we hearM
And others are no moreJ
Many a noble soldier diedN
In Libby prison cellO
And comrades perish'd side by sideN
As many a man can tellO
-
No loving hand was near a couchP
To bathe an aching headQ
No loving friend to watch the hoursG
Or soothe their dying bedQ
No friend to wipe the fallen tearsG
From off the dewy faceG
No loving kindred was there nearL
To mark their resting placeG
