Wild roved the Indians onceB
On the banks of Grand RiverC
And they built their little hutsD
Down by that flowing riverC
In a pleasant valley fairE
Where flows the river rapidF
An Indian village once was thereE
Where now stands Grand RapidsG
-
Indian girls and boys were seenH
With their bow and quiverC
Riding in their light canoesI
Up and down the riverC
Their hearts were full of joyJ
Happy voices singingK
Made music with forest birdsL
They kept the valley ringingK
-
Indians have left and goneM
Beyond the MississippiN
They called the river OwashtenongK
Where stands this pleasant cityN
Louis Campau the first white manO
Bought land in Grand RapidsG
He lived and died an honored manO
By people of Grand RapidsG
-
When Campau came to the valleyN
No bridge was across the riverC
Indians in their light canoesI
Rowed them o'er the waterC
Railroads now from every wayP
Run through the city Grand RapidsG
The largest town in west MichiganQ
Is the city of Grand RapidsG
