In the year eighteen seventy sixA
A Fourth of July celebrationB
Was held in Grand Rapids cityC
In honor to our nationB
The largest city in the county of KentD
Is this city and it is respectedE
For thousands of people was here to seeC
The beautiful arch erectedF
-
The Centennial arch on Campau PlaceG
Was the most principal featureH
It was a grand beautiful sightI
To all human sensitive creaturesJ
To all the people that loved to readK
The mottoes on it paintedF
The engravings too and tellL
What each one representedF
-
The paintings and mottoes on the archM
Was viewed by many peopleN
It was Colonel Joseph Penney's designO
And his work could not be equalledF
Mr C H Gifford was architectF
He formed the noble structureH
A memento to the Centennial yearP
A pride of our nation's cultureH
-
A cabin was built too I believeQ
That nicely representedF
One that the traders built years agoR
This was the only one inventedF
Ten thousand people respected itF
This token of early years with payS
The honor of this little hutF
Was due to Mr GodfroyH
-
The stars and stripes was honored tooF
For from a thousand windows wavingT
That dear old flag red white and blueF
That's loved throughout our nationB
That same flag for one hundred yearsU
Has waved over our nationB
May God let it forever waveV
Over our Union celebrationB
-
The people in the city friendsW
Was an honor to our nationB
For they all joined heart and handF
In our Union celebrationB
Some gave money other laborH
To maintain what was intendedF
It was a success some people saidF
Who here that day attendedF
-
That day will never be forgotF
By the people of Kent countyF
God bless the people who joined that dayS
In the honor of our countryF
The people in the city friendsW
Dearly loved this nationB
For they saved no time or expenseX
In our Centennial celebrationB
