Light light the lastA
Till the night be doneB
Keep the watch for stars and sun and eyelids over castA
-
Once there seemed a skyC
Brooding over menD
Now no stars have come again since their bright good byeC
-
Once my dreams were wiseE
Now I nothing knowF
Fasting and the dark have so put out my heart's eyesE
-
But thy golden breathG
Burns against my cheekH
I can feel and love and seek all the rune it saithG
-
Do not thou be spentI
Holy thing of fireJ
Only hope of heart's desire dulled with wondermentK
-
While there bide these twoL
Hands to bar the windM
Though such fingers chill and thinned shed no roses throughL
-
While this body bendsN
Only for thy guardO
Like a tower to ward and worship all the light it sendsN
-
It is not for fearP
Lest there ring some cryC
On the midnight 'Rise and come Lo the Bridegroom near '-
-
It is not for prideQ
To be shining fairR
In a wedding garment there lighting home the BrideQ
-
It is not to winS
Love for hoarded toilT
From those poor with their spent oil weeping 'Light us in '-
-
No but in despiteU
Of all vigils setV
Do I bind me to thee yet strangest thing of LightU
-
Only all for theeG
Whatsoe'er thou artW
Smiling through the blinded heart things it cannot seeG
-
Very Soul's DesireJ
Take my life and liveX
By the rapture thine doth give ecstasy of fireJ
-
Hold thy golden breathG
For I feel not hearY
Spent with joy and fear to lose thee all the song it saithG
-
Light light my ownZ
Do not thou disownZ
Thy poor keeper of the light for Light's sake aloneZ
-
-
-
The dark had left no speech save hand in handA2
Between us two the while with others nearP
Mine questioned thine with 'Why should I be here '-
'Yet bide thou here ' said thine 'and understand '-
-
And mine was mute but strove not then to goF
And hid itself and murmured 'Do not hearY
The listening in my heart ' Said thine 'My DearP
I will not hear it ever But I know '-
-
Said mine to thine 'Let be Now will I goF
For you are saying you who do not speakH
This hand in hand is one day cheek to cheek '-
And said thy hand around me 'Even so '-
-
Then mine to thine 'Yea I have been aloneZ
Yet happy This is strange This is not IC
You hold me but you can not tell me why '-
And said thy hand to mine again 'My Own '-
