May 24, 1980 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEEEEDFDFGEGEDEDE

I have braved for want of wild beasts steel cagesA
carved my term and nickname on bunks and raftersB
lived by the sea flashed aces in an oasisC
dined with the devil knows whom in tails on trufflesD
From the height of a glacier I beheld half a world the earthlyE
width Twice have drowned thrice let knives rake my nitty grittyE
Quit the country the bore and nursed meE
Those who forgot me would make a cityE
I have waded the steppes that saw yelling Huns in saddlesD
worn the clothes nowadays back in fashion in every quarterF
planted rye tarred the roofs of pigsties and stablesD
guzzled everything save dry waterF
I've admitted the sentries' third eye into my wet and foulG
dreams Munched the bread of exile it's stale and wartyE
Granted my lungs all sounds except the howlG
switched to a whisper Now I am fortyE
What should I say about my life That it's long and abhors transparenceD
Broken eggs make me grieve the omelet though makes me vomitE
Yet until brown clay has been rammed down my larynxD
only gratitude will be gushing from itE
