The Campaign A Poem To His Grace The Duke Of MarlboroughA
-
While crowds of princes your deserts proclaimB
Proud in their number to enrol your nameB
While emperors to you commit their causeC
And Anna's praises crown the vast applauseD
Accept great leader what the Muse recitesE
That in ambitious verse attempts your fightsE
Fir'd and transported with a theme so newF
Ten thousand wonders opening to my viewF
Shine forth at once sieges and storms appearG
And wars and conquests fill the' important yearG
-
Rivers of blood I see and hills of slainH
And Iliad rising out of one campaignH
The haughty Gaul beheld with towering prideI
His ancient bounds enlarg'd on every sideI
Pyrene's lofty barriers were subduedJ
And in the midst of his wide empire stoodK
Ausonia's states the victor to restrainH
Opposed their Alps and Apennines in vainH
Nor found themselves with strength of rocks immur'dK
Behind their everlasting hills secur'dK
-
The rising Danube its long race beganL
And half its course through the new conquests ranL
Amaz'd and anxious for her soverign's fatesM
Germania trembled through a hundred statesM
Great Leopold himself was seiz'd with fearG
He gaz'd around but saw no succour nearG
He gaz'd and half abandon'd to despairN
His hopes on heaven and confidence in prayO
To Britain's queen the nations turn their eyesP
On her resolves the western world reliesP
-
Confiding still amidst its dire alarmsQ
In Anna's conncils and in Churchill's armsQ
Thrice happy Britain from the kingdoms rentK
To fit the guardian of the continentK
That sees her bravest son advanc'd so highR
And flourishing so near her prince's eyeR
Thy favourites grow not up by fortune's sportK
Or from the crimes or follies of a courtK
On the firm basis of desert they riseP
From long try'd faith and friendship's holy tyesP
-
Their soverign's well distinguish'd smiles they shareN
Her ornaments in peace her strength in warS
The nation thanks them with a public voiceP
By showers of blessings heaven approves their choiceP
Envy itself is dumb in wonder lostK
And factions strive who shall applaud them mostK
Soon as soft vernal breezes warm the skyR
Britannia's colours in the zephyrs flyR
Her chief already has his march begunT
Crossing the provinces himself had wonT
-
Till the Moselle appearing from afarU
Retards the progress of the moving warS
Delightful stream had nature bid her fallV
In distant climes far from the perjur'd GaulV
But now a purchase to the sword she liesP
Her harvests for uncertain owners riseP
Each vineyard doubtful of its master growsP
And to the victor's bowl each vintage flowsP
The discontented shades of slaughter'd hostsP
That wander'd on her banks her heroes ghostsP
-
Hop'd when they saw Britannia's arms appearG
The vengeance due to their great deaths was nearG
Our godlike leader ere the stream he pastK
The mighty scheme of all his labours castK
Forming the wondrous year within his thoughtK
His bosom glow'd with battles yet unfoughtK
The long laborious march he first surveysP
And joins the distant Danube to the MaeseP
Between whose floods such pathless forests growA
Such mountains rise so many rivers flowA
-
The toil looks lovely in the hero's eyesP
And danger serves but to enhance the prizeP
Big with the fate of Europe he renewsP
His dreadful course and the proud foe pursuesP
Infected by the burning Scorpion's heatK
the sultry gales round his chas'd temples beatK
Till on the borders of the Maine he findsP
Defensive shadows and refreshing windsP
Our British youth with in born freedom boldK
Unnumber'd scenes of servitude beholdK
-
Nations of slaves with tyranny debas'dK
Their maker's image more than half defac'dK
Hourly instructed as they urge their toilW
To prize their queen and love their native soilW
Still to the rising sun they take their wayO
Through clouds of dust and gain upon the dayO
When now the Neckar on its friendly coastK
With cooling streams revives the fainting hostK
That chearfully his labours past forgetsP
The mid night watches and the noon day heatsP
-
O'er prostrate towns and palaces they passP
Now cover'd o'er with woods and hid in grassP
Breathing revenge whilst anger and disdainH
Fire every breast and boil in every veinH
Here shatter'd walls like broken rocks from farU
Rise up in hideous views the guilt of warS
Whilst here the vine o'er hills of ruin climbsP
Industrious to conceal great Bourbon's crimesP
At length the fame of England's hero drewF
Eugenio to the glorious interviewF
-
Great souls by instinct to each other turnX
Demand alliance and in friendship burnX
A sudden friendship while with stretch'd out raysP
They meet each other mingling blaze with blazeP
Polish'd in courts and harden'd in the fieldK
Renown'd for conquest and in council skill'dK
Their courage dwells not in a troubled floodK
Of mounting spirits and fermenting bloodK
Lodg'd in the soul with virtue over rul'dK
Inflam'd by reason and by reason cool'dK
-
In hours of peace content to be unknownY
And only in the field of battle shownY
To souls like these in mutual fiendship join'dK
Heaven dares intrust the cause of human kindK
Britannia's graceful sons appear in armsP
Her harrass'd troops the hero's presence warmsP
Whilst the high hills and rivers all aroundK
With thundering peals of British shouts resoundK
Doubling their speed they march with fresh delightK
Eager for glory and require the fightK
-
So the stanch hound the trembling deer pursuesP
And smells his footsteps in the tainted dewsP
The tedious track unraveling by degreesP
But when the scent comes warm in every breezeP
Fir'd at the near approach he shoots awayO
On his full stretch and bears upon his preyO
The march concludes the various realms are pastK
Th' immortal Schellenberg appears at lastK
Like hills th' aspiring ramparts rise on highR
Like valley's at their feet the trenches lieR
-
Batteries on batteries guard each fatal passP
Threatening destruction rows of hollow brassP
Tube behind tube the dreadful entrance keepZ
Whilst in thier wombs ten thousand thunders sleepZ
Great Churchill owns charm'd with the glorious sightK
His march o'er paid by such a promis'd fightK
The western sun now shot a feeble rayO
And faintly scatter'd the remains of dayO
Ev'ning approach'd but oh what host of foesP
Were never to behold that evening closeP
-
Thickening their ranks and wedg'd in firm arrayO
The close compacted Britons win their wayO
In vain the cannon their throng'd war defac'dK
With tracts of death and laid the battle wasteK
Still pressing forward to the fight they brokeA2
Through flames of sulphur and a night of smokeA2
Till slaughter'd legions fill'd the trench belowA
And bore their fierce avengers to the foeA
High on the works the mingling hosts engageB2
The battle kindled into tenfold rageB2
-
With showers of bullets and with storms of fireC2
Burns in full fury heaps on heaps expireD2
Nations with nations mix'd confus'dly dieR
And lsot in one promiscuous carnage lieR
How many generous Britons meet their doomE2
New to the field and heroes in the bloomE2
Th' illustrious youghts that left their native shoreS
To march where Britons never march'd beforeS
O fatal love of fame O glorious heatK
Only destructive to the brave and greatK
-
After such toils o'ercome such dangers pastK
Stretch'd on Bavarian ramparts breathe their lastK
But hold my Muse may no complaints appearG
Nor blot the day with an ungrateful tearN
While Marlborough lives Britannia's stars dispenseP
A friendly light and shine in innocenceP
Plunging through seas of blood his fiery steedK
Where e'er his friends retire or foes succeedK
Those he supports these drives to sudden flightK
And turns the various fortune of the fightK
-
Forbear great man renown'd in arms forbearN
To Brave the thickest terrors of the warN
Nor hazard thus confus'd in crowds of foesP
Britannia's safety and the world's reposeP
Let nations anxious for thy life abateK
This scorn of danger and contempt of fateK
Thou liv'st not for thyself thy Queen demandsP
Conquest and peace from thy victorious handsP
Kingdoms and empires in thy fortunes joinF2
And Europe's destiny depends on thineG2
-
At length the long disputed pass they gainH
By crowded armies fortify'd in vainH
The war breaks in the fierce Bavarians yieldK
And see their camp with British legions fill'dK
So Belgian mounds bear on their shatter'd sidesP
The sea's whole weight increas'd with swelling tidesP
But if the rushing wave a passage findsP
Enrag'd by watery moons and warring windsP
The trembling peasant sees his country roundK
Cover'd with tempests and in oceans drown'dK
-
The few surviving foes disperst in flightK
Refuse of swords a nd gleanings of a fightK
In every rustling wind the victor hearN
And Marlborough's form in every shadow fearN
Till the dark cope of night with kind embraceP
Befriends the rout and covers their disgraceP
To Donavert with unresisted forceP
The gay victorious army bends its courseP
The growth of meadows and the pride of fieldsP
Whatever spoils Bavaria's summer yieldsP
-
The Danube's great increase Britannia sharesP
The food of armies and support of warsP
With magazines of death destructive ballsP
And cannon doom'd to batter Landau's wallsP
The victor finds each hidden cavern stor'dK
And turns their fury on their guilty LordK
Deluded prince how is thy greatness crostK
And all the gaudy dream of empire lostK
That proudly set thee on a fancy'd throneY
And made imaginary realms thy ownY
-
Thy troops that now behind the Danube joinF2
Shall shortly seek for shelter from the RhineG2
Nor find it there Surrounded with alarmsP
Thou hop'st the assistance fo the Gallic armsP
The Gallic arms in safety shall advanceP
And crowd thy standards with the power of FranceP
While to exalt thy doom th' aspiring GaulV
Shares thy destruction and adorns thy fallV
Unbounded courage and compassion join'dK
Tempering each other in the victor's mindK
-
Alternately proclaim him good and greatK
And make the Hero and the Man compleatK
Long did he strive th' obdurate foe to gainH
By proffer'd grace but long he strove in vainH
Till fir'd at length he thinks it vain to spareN
His rising wrath and gives a loose to warN
In vengeance rous'd the soldier fills his handK
With sword and fire and ravages the landK
A thousand villages to ashes turnsP
In crackling flames a thousand harvests burnsP
-
To the thick woods the wolly flocks retreatK
And mixt with bellowing herds confus'dly bleatK
Their trembling lofds the common shade partakeH2
And cries of infants sound in every brakeH2
The listening soldier fixt in sorrow standsP
Loth to obey his leader's just commandsP
The leader grieves by generous pity sway'dK
To see his just commands so well obey'dK
But now the trumpet terrible from farN
In shriller clangors animates the warN
-
Confederate drums in fuller concert beatK
And echoing hills the loud alarm repeatK
Gallia's proud standards to Bavaria's join'dK
Unfurl their gilded lilies in the windK
the daring prince his blasted hopes renewsP
And while the thick embattled host he viewsP
Stretched out in deep array and dreadful lengthI2
His hearts dilates and glories in his strengthI2
The fatal day its mighty course beganL
That the griev'd world had long desir'd in vainH
-
States that their new captivity bemoan'dK
Armies of martyrs that in exile groan'dK
Sighs from the depth of gloomy dungeons heardK
And prayers in bitterness of soul preferr'dK
Europe's loud cries that Providence assail'dK
And Anna's ardent vows at length prevail'dK
The day was come when heaven design'd to showA
His care and conduct of the world belowA
Behold in awful march and dread arrayN
The long extended squadrons shape thier wayN
-
Death in approaching terrible impartsP
An anxious horror to the bravest heartsP
Yet do their beating breasts demand the strifeJ2
And thirst of glory quells the love of lifeJ2
No vulgar fears can British minds controlK2
Heat of revenge and noble pride of soulK2
O'erlook the foe advantag'd by his postK
Lessen his nmbers a nd contract his hostK
Though fens and floods possest the middle spaceP
That unprovok'd they would have fear'd to passP
-
Nor fens nor floods can stop Britannia's bandsP
When her proud foe rang'd on their borders standsP
But O my Muse what numbers wilt thou findK
To sing the furious troops in battle join'dK
Methinks I hear the drums tumultuous soundK
The victor's shouts and dying groans confoundK
The dreadful burst of cannon rend the skiesP
And all the thunder of the battle riseP
'Twas then great Marlborough's mighty soul was prov'dK
That in the shock of charging hosts unmov'dK
-
Amidst confusion horror and despairN
Examin'd all the dreadful scenes of warN
In peaceful thought the field of death survey'dK
To fainting squadrons sent the timely aidK
Inspir'd repuls'd battalions to engageB2
And taught the doubtful battle where to rageB2
So when an angel by divine commandK
With rising tempests shaks a guilty landK
Such as of late o'er pale Britannia pastK
-
Calm and serene he drives the furious blastK
And pleas'd th' Almighty's orders to performL2
Rides in the whirlwind and directs the stormL2
But see the haughty houshold troops advanceP
The dread of Europe and the pride of FranceP
The war's whole art each private soldier knowsP
And with a General's love of conquest glowsP
Proudly he marches on and void of fearN
Laughs at the shaking of the British spearN
Vain insolence with native freedom braveM2
-
The meanest Briton scorns the highest slaveM2
Contempt and fury fire their souls by turnsP
Each nation's glory in each warrior burnsP
Each fights as in his arm th' important dayN
And all the fate of his great monarch layN
A thousand glorious actions that might claimB
Truimphant laurels and immortal fameB
Confus'd in crouds of glorious actions lieR
And troops of heroes undistinguish'd dieR
O Dormer how can I behold thy fateK
-
And not the wonders of thy youth relateK
How can I see the gay the brave the youngN2
Fall in the cloud of war and lie usungN2
In joys of conquest he resigns his breathO2
And fill'd with England's glory smiles in deathO2
The rout begins the Gallic squadrons runT
Compell'd in crouds to meet the fate they shunT
Thousands of fiery steeds with wounds transfix'dK
Floatting in gore with their dead masters mixtK
'Midst heaps of spears and standards driven aroundK
-
Lie in the Danube's bloody whirl pools drown'dK
Troops of bold youths born on the distant SoaneT
Or sounding borders of the rapid RhoneT
Or where the Seine her flowery fields dividesP
Or where the Loire through winding vineyards glidesP
In heaps the rolling billows sweep awayN
And into Scythian seas their bloated corps conveyN
From Blenheim's towers the Gaul with wild affrightK
Beholds the various havock of the fightK
His waving banners that so oft had stoodK
-
Planted in fields of death and streams of bloodK
So wont the guarded enemy to reachP2
And rise triumphant in the fatal breachP2
Or pierce the broken foe's remotest linesP
The hardy veteran with tears resignsP
Unfortunate Tallard Oh who can nameB
The pangs of rage of sorrow and of shameB
That with mixt tumult in thy bosom swell'dK
When first thou saw'st thy bravest troops repell'dK
Thine only son pierc'd with a deadly woundK
-
Chok'd in his blood and gasping on the groundK
Thyself in bondage by the victor keptK
The chief the father and the captive weptK
An English Muse is touch'd with generous woeA
And in th'unhappy man forgets the foeA
Greatly distrest they loud complaints forbearN
Blame not the turns of fate and chance of warN
Give thy brave foes their due nor blush to ownT
The fatal field by such great leaders wonT
The field whence fam'd Eugenio bore awayN
-
Only the second honours of the dayN
With floods of gore that from the vanquish'd fellQ2
The marshes stagnate and the rivers swellQ2
Mountains of slain lie heap'd upon the groundK
Or midst the roarings of the Danube drown'dK
Whole captive hosts the conqueror detainsP
In painful bondage and inglorious chainsP
Ev'n those who 'scape the fetters and the swordK
Nor seek the fortunes of a happier lordK
Their raging King dishonours to compleatK
-
Marlborough's great work and finish the defeatK
From Memminghen's high domes and Augsburg's wallsP
The distant battle drives th' insulting GaulsP
Freed by the terror of the victor's nameB
The rescued States his great protection claimB
Whilst Ulme th' approach of her deliverer waitsP
And longs to open her obsequious gatesP
The hero's breast still swells with great designsP
In every thought the towering genius shinesP
If to the foe his dreadful course he bendsP
-
O'er the wide continent his march extendsP
If sieges in his labouring thoughts are form'dK
Camps are assaulted and an army storm'dK
If to the sight of his active soul is bentK
The fate of Europe turns on its eventK
What distant land what region can affordK
An action worthy his victorious swordK
Where will he next the flying Gaul defeatK
To make the series of his toils compleatK
Where the swoln Rhine rushing with all its forceP
-
Divides the hostile nations in its courseP
While each contracts its bounds or wider growsP
Enlarg'd or straighten'd as the river flowsP
On Gallia's side a mighty bulwark standsP
That all the wide extended plain commandsP
Twice since the war was kindled has it try'dK
The victor's rage and twice has chang'd its sideK
As oft whole armies with the prize o'erjoy'dK
Have the long summer on its walls employ'dK
Hither our mighty chief his arms directsP
-
Hence future triumphs from the war expectsP
And though the dog star had its course begunT
Carries his arms still nearer to the sunT
Fixt on the glorious action he forgetsP
The change of seasons and increase of heatsP
No toils are painful that can danger showA
No climes unlovely that contain a foeA
The roving Gaul to his own bounds restrain'dK
Learns to incamp within his native landK
But soon as the victorious host he spiesP
-
From hill to hill from stream to stream he fliesP
Such dire impressions in his heart remainT
Of Marlboroough's sword and Hochsset's fatal plainT
In vain Britannia's mighty chief besetsP
Their shady coverts and obscure retreatsP
They fly the conqueror's approaching fameB
That bears the force of armies in his nameB
Austria's young monarch whose imperial swayN
Sceptres and thrones are destin'd to obeyN
Whose boasted ancertry so high extendsP
-
That in the pagan gods his lineage endsP
Comes from afar in gratitude to ownT
The geat supporter of his father's throneT
What tides of glory to his bosom ranT
Clasp'd in th' embrace of the godlike manT
How were his eyes with pleasing wonder fixtK
To see such fire with so much sweetness mixtK
Such easy greatness such a graceful portK
So turn'd and finish'd for the camp or courtK
Achilles thus was form'd with every graceP
-
And Nireus shone but in the second placeP
Thus the great father of almighty RomeR2
Divinely flusht with an immortal bloomE2
That Cytherea's fragrant breath bestow'dK
In all the charms of his bright mother glow'dK
The royal youth by Marlborough's presence charm'dK
Taught by his counsels by his actions warm'dK
On Landau with redoubled fury fallsP
Discharges all his thunder on its wallsP
O'er mines and caves of death provokes the fightK
-
And leans to conquer in the hero's fightK
The British chief for mighty toils renown'dK
Increas'd in titles and with conquests crown'dK
To Belgian coasts his tedious march renewsP
And the long windings of the Rhine pursuesP
Clearing its borders from usurping foesP
Amd blest by rescued nations as he goesP
Treves fears no more freed from its dire alarmsP
And Traerbach feels the terror of his armsP
Seated on rocks her proud foundations shakeN2
-
While Marlborough presses to the bold attackN2
Plants all his batteries bids his cannon roarN
And shows how Landau might have fall'n beforeN
Scar'd at his near approach great Louis fearsP
Vengeance reserv'd for his declining yearsP
Forgets his thirst of universal swayN
And scarce can teach is subjects to obeyN
His arms he finds on vain attempts employ'dK
Th' ambitious projects for his race destroy'dK
The works of ages sunk in one campaignT
And lives of millions sacrific'd in vainT
-
Such are th' effects of Anna's royal caresP
By her Britannia great in foreign warsP
Ranges through nations wheresoe'er disjoin'dK
Without the wonted aid of sea and windK
By her th' unfetter'd Ister's states are freeN
And taste the sweets of English libertyN
But who can tell the joys of those that lieR
Beneath the constant influence of her eyeR
Whilst in diffusive showers her bounties fallV
-
Like heaven's indulgence and descend on allV
Secure the happy succour the distrestN
Make every subject glad and a whole people blestN
Thus would I fain Britannia's wars rehearseP
In the smooth records of a faithful verseP
That if such numbers can o'er time prevailS2
May tell posterity the wondrous taleS2
When actions unadorn'd are faint and weakN2
Cities and countries must be taught to speakN2
-
Gods may descend in factions from the skiesP
And rivers from their oozy beds ariseP
Fiction may deck the truth wth spurious raysP
And round the hero cast a borrow'd blazeP
Marlborough's exploits appear divinely brightN
And proudly shine in their own native lightN
Rais'd of themselves their genuine charms they boastN
And those who paint them truest praise them mostN
