To you the hero of my verse reveals | F |
His great designs to you in council tells | G |
His inmost thoughts determining the doom | H |
Of towns unstorm'd and battles yet to come | I |
And well could you in your immortal strains | J |
Describe His conduct and reward his pains | J |
But since the state has all your cares ingross'd | D |
And poetry in higher thoughts is lost | D |
Attend to what a lesser Muse indites | J |
Pardon her faults and countenance her flights | J |
On you my Lord with anxious fear I wait | D |
And from your judgment must expect my fate | D |
Who free from vulgar passions are above | K |
Degrading envy or misguided love | K |
If you well pleas'd shall smile upon my lays | J |
Secure of fame my voice I'll boldly raise | J |
