A Poem To His Magesty, Presented To The Lord Keeper. To The Right Hon. Sir John Somers, Lord Keeper Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFGHIJJDDJJ DDKKJJJ

If yet your thoughts are loose from state affairsA
Nor feel the burden of a kingdom's caresA
If yet your time and actions are your ownB
Receive the present of a Muse unknownB
A Must that in adventurous numbers singsC
The rout of armies a nd the fall of KingsC
Britain advanc'd and Europe's peace restor'dD
By Somers' counsels and by Nassau's swordD
To you my Lord these daring thoughts belongE
Who help'd to raise the subject of my songE
To you the hero of my verse revealsF
His great designs to you in council tellsG
His inmost thoughts determining the doomH
Of towns unstorm'd and battles yet to comeI
And well could you in your immortal strainsJ
Describe His conduct and reward his painsJ
But since the state has all your cares ingross'dD
And poetry in higher thoughts is lostD
Attend to what a lesser Muse inditesJ
Pardon her faults and countenance her flightsJ
On you my Lord with anxious fear I waitD
And from your judgment must expect my fateD
Who free from vulgar passions are aboveK
Degrading envy or misguided loveK
If you well pleas'd shall smile upon my laysJ
Secure of fame my voice I'll boldly raiseJ
For next to what you write is what you praiseJ
