Hymn Xxiii: Extended On A Cursed Tree Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEFE GHGH IJIJ KLML NOPO QARA SCTB UVUV

Extended on a cursed treeA
Besmeared with dust and sweat and bloodB
See there the king of glory seeA
Sinks and expires the Son of GodC
-
Who who my Saviour this hath doneD
Who could thy sacred body woundE
No guilt thy spotless heart hath knownF
No guile hath in thy lips been foundE
-
I I alone have done the deedG
'Tis I thy sacred flesh have tornH
My sins have caused thee Lord to bleedG
Pointed the nail and fixed the thornH
-
The burden for me to sustainI
Too great on thee my Lord was laidJ
To heal me thou hast borne my painI
To bless me thou a curse wast madeJ
-
In the devouring lion's teethK
Torn and forsook of all I layL
Thou sprang'st into the jaws of deathM
From death to save the helpless preyL
-
Saviour how shall I proclaimN
How pay the mighty debt I oweO
Let all I have and all I amP
Ceaseless to all thy glory showO
-
Too much to thee I cannot giveQ
Too much I cannot do for theeA
Let all thy love and all thy griefR
Graven on my heart for ever beA
-
The meek the still the lowly mindS
O may I learn from thee my GodC
And love with softest pity joinedT
For those that trample on thy bloodB
-
Still let thy tears thy groans thy sighsU
O'erflow my eyes and heave my breastV
Till loose from flesh and earth I riseU
And ever in thy bosom restV
