Three women walked upon a roadA
And the first said airilyB
Of all the trees in all the worldC
Which is the loving treeD
-
The second said My eyes have seenE
No tree that is not fairF
But the Orange tree is the sweetest treeD
The loving blood is thereF
-
And the third said In the green timeG
I knew a loving treeD
That gave a drink of the blood red milkH
It was the MulberryD
-
Then the first one said Of all the treesI
No sweetest can I nameJ
Ask her who yonder slowly comesK
That woman lean and lameJ
-
Grief like a hideous suckling hungL
Along her hollow breastM
Pain was upon her as she walkedN
And as she stooped to restM
-
Why will you question so she saidO
Is it to mock at meD
For how should I who walk in HellB
Know of a loving treeD
-
My eyes are not as woman's eyesP
They hope not east or westM
Dull Famine my bed mate isQ
And Loneliness my guestM
-
'Tis not the most delicious flowerR
That leaves the scent of SpringS
Nor is it yet the brightest birdT
That loads his heart to singS
-
A tree may dance in the white weatherR
Or dream in a blue gownU
A tree may sing as a sweetheartV
To bid the stars come downU
-
Some trees are slim and lovableB
And some are sleek and strongW
But the tree that has the cripple's heartV
Will know the cripple's songW
-
The sweetest death is the red deathX
That comes up nakedlyB
And the tree that has the foiled heartV
It is the loving treeD
-
While ever lip shall seek for lipY
While ever light shall fallB
The tree that has the ruined heartV
Is tenderest of allB
-
Oh ye may have your men to kissZ
And children warm to holdA2
But the heart that had the hottest loveB2
Was never yet consoledA2
-
The women three walked on their wayC2
Their shamed eyes could seeD
How well the tree with the foiled heartV
Is still the loving treeD
