Three women walked upon a roadA
And the first said airilyB
Of all the trees in all the worldC
Which is the loving treeD

The second said My eyes have seenE
No tree that is not fairF
But the Orange tree is the sweetest treeD
The loving blood is thereF

And the third said In the green timeG
I knew a loving treeD
That gave a drink of the blood red milkH
It was the MulberryD

Then the first one said Of all the treesI
No sweetest can I nameJ
Ask her who yonder slowly comesK
That woman lean and lameJ
-
Grief like a hideous suckling hungL
Along her hollow breastM
Pain was upon her as she walkedN
And as she stooped to restM

Why will you question so she saidO
Is it to mock at meD
For how should I who walk in HellB
Know of a loving treeD

My eyes are not as woman's eyesP
They hope not east or westM
Dull Famine my bed mate isQ
And Loneliness my guestM
-
'Tis not the most delicious flowerR
That leaves the scent of SpringS
Nor is it yet the brightest birdT
That loads his heart to singS

A tree may dance in the white weatherR
Or dream in a blue gownU
A tree may sing as a sweetheartV
To bid the stars come downU

Some trees are slim and lovableB
And some are sleek and strongW
But the tree that has the cripple's heartV
Will know the cripple's songW

The sweetest death is the red deathX
That comes up nakedlyB
And the tree that has the foiled heartV
It is the loving treeD

While ever lip shall seek for lipY
While ever light shall fallB
The tree that has the ruined heartV
Is tenderest of allB
-
Oh ye may have your men to kissZ
And children warm to holdA2
But the heart that had the hottest loveB2
Was never yet consoledA2
-
The women three walked on their wayC2
Their shamed eyes could seeD
How well the tree with the foiled heartV
Is still the loving treeD
