To Giovanni Salzilli, A Roman Poet, In His Illness. Scazons. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEFGGHHIIJJKK LLMMDDNNOOPQRRESTTQQ

My halting Muse that dragg'st by choice alongA
Thy slow slow step in melancholy songA
And lik'st that pace expressive of thy caresB
Not less than Diopeia's sprightlier airsB
When in the dance she beats with measur'd treadC
Heav'n's floor in front of Juno's golden bedC
Salute Salsillus who to verse divineD
Prefers with partial love such lays as mineD
Thus writes that Milton then who wafted o'erE
From his own nest on Albion's stormy shoreF
Where Eurus fiercest of th'Aeolian bandG
Sweeps with ungovern'd rage the blasted landG
Of late to more serene Ausonia cameH
To view her cities of illustrious nameH
To prove himself a witness of the truthI
How wise her elders and how learn'd her YouthI
Much good Salsillus and a body freeJ
From all disease that Milton asks for theeJ
Who now endur'st the languor and the painsK
That bile inflicts diffus'd through all thy veinsK
Relentless malady not mov'd to spareL
By thy sweet Roman voice and Lesbian airL
Health Hebe's sister sent us from the skiesM
And thou Apollo whom all sickness fliesM
Pythius or Paean or what name divineD
Soe'er thou chuse haste heal a priest of thineD
Ye groves of Faunus and ye hills that meltN
With vinous dews where meek Evander dweltN
If aught salubrious in your confines growO
Strive which shall soonest heal your poet's woeO
That render'd to the Muse he loves againP
He may enchant the meadows with his strainQ
Numa reclin'd in everlasting easeR
Amid the shade of dark embow'ring treesR
Viewing with eyes of unabated fireE
His loved Aegeria shall that strain admireS
So sooth'd the tumid Tiber shall revereT
The tombs of kings nor desolate the yearT
Shall curb his waters with a friendly reinQ
And guide them harmless till they meet the mainQ
