Sonnet Xx: Lawrence, Of Virtuous Father Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCDBBCDBEFEGGF

i To Mr Lawrence iA
-
Lawrence of virtuous father virtuous sonB
Now that the fields are dank and ways are mireC
Where shall we sometimes meet and by the fireD
Help waste a sullen day what may be wonB
From the hard season gaining Time will runB
On smoother till Favonius re inspireC
The frozen earth and clothe in fresh attireD
The lily and rose that neither sowed nor spunB
What neat repast shall feast us light and choiceE
Of Attic taste with wine whence we may riseF
To hear the lute well touched or artful voiceE
Warble immortal notes and Tuscan airG
He who of those delights can judge and spareG
To interpose them oft is not unwiseF

ian thomson: Milton was serious, but not an old fogey, I like his dignity and restraint, and have loved his poetry all my life. An unusual man, but what talent! I feel I know him
