The Way To Heaven. Translations. From The German Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EFGH IICC JJKL MMNN

One day the Sultan grand and grimA
Ordered the Mufti brought to himA
Now let thy wisdom solve for meB
The question I shall put to theeB
-
The different tribes beneath my swayC
Four several sects of priests obeyC
Now tell me which of all the fourD
Is on the path to Heaven's doorD
-
The Sultan spake and then was dumbE
The Mufti looked about the roomF
And straight made answer to his lordG
Fearing the bowstring at each wordH
-
Thou godlike in thy lofty birthI
Who art our Allah upon earthI
Illume me with thy favouring rayC
And I will answer as I mayC
-
Here where thou thronest in thy hallJ
I see there are four doors in allJ
And through all four thy slaves may gazeK
Upon the brightness of thy faceL
-
That I came hither safely throughM
Was to thy gracious message dueM
And blinded by thy splendour's flameN
I cannot tell the way I cameN
