Good King Wenceslas looked outA
On the feast of StephenB
When the snow lay round aboutA
Deep and crisp and evenC
Brightly shone the moon that nightD
Though the frost was cruelE
When a poor man came in sightD
Gathering winter fuelE
-
Hither page and stand by meF
If thou know'st it tellingG
Yonder peasant who is heF
Where and what his dwellingG
Sire he lives a good league henceH
Underneath the mountainB
Right against the forest fenceH
By Saint Agnes' fountainB
-
Bring me flesh and bring me wineI
Bring me pine logs hitherJ
Thou and I will see him dineI
When we bear them thitherJ
Page and monarch forth they wentK
Forth they went togetherJ
Though the rude winds wild lamentK
And the bitter weatherJ
-
Sire the night is darker nowL
And the wind blows strongerJ
Fails my heart I know now howL
I can go no longerJ
Mark my footsteps my good pageM
Tread thou in them boldlyF
Thou shalt find the winter's rageM
Freeze thy blood less coldlyF
-
In his master's steps he trodN
Where the snow lay dintedN
Heat was in the very sodN
Which the saint had printedN
Therefore Christian men be sureJ
Wealth or rank possessingG
Ye who now will bless the poorJ
Shall yourselves find blessingG
